Kailash Helicopter Yatra Cost: What's Included & Extras
By The Kailash Holiday
The Kailash Mansarovar Helicopter Yatra is an 11-day package from Kathmandu via Nepalgunj, Simikot and Hilsa. Rates are quoted on request, per pilgrim on twin-share, for your group and dates. It costs more than the 13-day group overland because of the domestic flights and helicopter legs, but it saves two to three days, avoids long road journeys and keeps you fewer days above 4,500 m. This guide explains where the money goes, what is and is not included, and how to compare quotes honestly.
Current status: Kailash yatras are currently on hold after the August 2026 Rasuwa floods, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung road crossing is currently closed. We are building the 2027 priority list now — message us on WhatsApp to be added. 2027 dates and rates will be confirmed once the Tibet side confirms.
Quick facts — Kailash Helicopter Yatra cost
| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Package rate | 2027 rates on request, per pilgrim, twin-share |
| Duration | 11 days from Kathmandu |
| Route | Kathmandu – Nepalgunj – Simikot (flights), Simikot – Hilsa (helicopter), then by road in Tibet |
| Tibet permits + Chinese visa paperwork | Permits included in our packages |
| Biggest single cost item | Helicopter legs between Simikot and Hilsa |
| Group discount | 5% for 6+ pilgrims, 7% for 10+ pilgrims |
| Documents deadline | At least 30 days before entry into Tibet (2026 rules; 2027 terms confirmed later) |
| Age | Pilgrims over 70 are not permitted (all routes) |
Where the money goes — stage by stage
The package price is built from these parts. We do not publish a line-by-line figure because flight, charter and Tibet-side costs are only confirmed closer to the season, but this is what you are paying for:
| Cost category | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Domestic flights | Kathmandu–Nepalgunj and Nepalgunj–Simikot, and back |
| Helicopter legs | Simikot–Hilsa and Hilsa–Simikot; small helicopters carry about five passengers per flight |
| Tibet permits and Chinese Group Visa | Government permits and visa paperwork, arranged by us as a registered agency |
| Vehicle inside Tibet | From the border to Mansarovar, Mansarovar to Darchen, and back |
| Accommodation | Hotels in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, lodges and guesthouses on the route |
| Meals | Meals arranged; details in your quote |
| Guide and support | English/Hindi-speaking guide, oxygen support, group support on the kora |
| Gear on loan | Duffel bag, sleeping bag and down jacket on loan for the trip; you can keep them for an extra charge — ask us |
| Operator service | Document processing, coordination, contingency planning |
The helicopter legs are the largest single item. Because each flight carries so few people, the charter cost is split between a small number of pilgrims — that is why the helicopter yatra costs more than overland.
What's NOT included — ask about each one
| Not included | Notes |
|---|---|
| International flight to/from Kathmandu | Depends on your city and season |
| Nepal visa on arrival | Foreign passports only — Indian citizens do not need one |
| China visa fee | Ask whether it is inside your quote; some passports pay more |
| Travel insurance covering 6,000 m | Must include helicopter evacuation — mandatory |
| Pony or porter on the 3-day parikrama | Optional, hired locally for the Dolma La section |
| Tips for guide, porter and driver | Customary at the end of the trip |
| Personal expenses | Snacks, bottled water, laundry, phone |
Honest budget planning: the package is only part of your total. When you compare quotes, add up flights, insurance, visa fee, pony or porter, tips and personal spending for each one. A cheaper headline price often leaves more of these out.
Group discounts
Booking as a group lowers the per-pilgrim cost:
- 6+ pilgrims: 5% discount per pilgrim
- 10+ pilgrims: 7% discount per pilgrim
Because helicopter seats are limited, larger groups may be split across several flights on the same day.
Helicopter vs overland — when is the difference worth it?
| Factor | Helicopter (11 days) | Group Overland (13 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 11 days | 13 days |
| Long road days | None | 4–5 |
| Days above 4,500 m | 5 | 7 |
| Walking | The parikrama only | The parikrama only |
| Weather risk | Flights to Simikot can be delayed by weather | Road conditions and border status |
| Cost | Higher — flights and charter | Lower — shared coach |
The parikrama is the same on every route: about 52 km over 3 days, crossing Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m.
The helicopter premium is usually worth it for:
- Pilgrims in their 60s (fewer days at altitude, no long drives)
- Working professionals with limited leave
- Anyone your doctor advises to limit time at altitude
The overland is usually the better value for:
- Younger, fit pilgrims
- Pilgrims who want more time at Mansarovar
- Budget-conscious group bookings
- Those who want the traditional journey by road (when the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung crossing reopens; it is currently closed)
See our full Helicopter vs Overland comparison for itinerary-level details.
When does the cost go up?
- Saga Dawa peak: Saga Dawa usually falls in May–June (the 4th Tibetan lunar month); 2027 dates will be published once confirmed. Helicopter seats around it fill first, so book early.
- Single room: solo pilgrims pay a single-room supplement unless they share.
- Private charter: a private helicopter for a small family is possible but costs much more than joining a group — ask us.
- Late bookings: documents must reach us at least 30 days before entry, so very late requests cannot be processed.
Acclimatisation on the helicopter route
Flying in does not skip acclimatisation. Under the 2026 rules, every pilgrim needs at least 2 nights above 2,800 m before going higher (2027 terms confirmed later). Simikot and the border area are used for this.
How to pay
- A deposit secures your place once your documents are checked; the balance schedule is set out in your quote
- We accept INR, USD, NPR, GBP, AED, AUD, CAD and SGD by bank transfer
- Cancellation terms are listed in your quote and on our FAQ page
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Kailash Helicopter Yatra cost?
Rates are quoted on request, per pilgrim on twin-share, for your group size and dates. Kailash yatras are currently on hold after the August 2026 Rasuwa floods; 2027 rates will be confirmed once the Tibet side confirms. WhatsApp us to join the 2027 priority list.
Is the helicopter yatra worth the extra cost over overland?
For pilgrims in their 60s, usually yes: fewer days above 4,500 m and no long road days. For fit younger pilgrims with time, overland is better value. Decide on fitness and time, not price alone.
Are there hidden costs in the helicopter package?
Ask about international flights to Kathmandu, the China visa fee, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation, a pony or porter on the parikrama, tips and personal expenses. We list inclusions and exclusions in writing in every quote.
Can I use a Voter ID instead of a passport?
No. Every pilgrim needs a passport valid for at least 6 months — an Election/Voter ID is not accepted for Tibet. Any existing Chinese visa in the passport is cancelled when the Chinese Group Visa is issued.
Can the helicopter yatra cost be reduced?
Book as a group (5% off for 6+, 7% off for 10+), share a room, and consider September or early October instead of the Saga Dawa peak.
What if I need to cancel?
Cancellation terms are set out in your quote and on our FAQ page. Permit fees usually cannot be refunded once permits are issued.
