Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Registration — 2027 Checklist
By The Kailash Holiday
To register for a Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, start at least 6–8 weeks before departure, and make sure your documents reach us at least 30 days before entry into Tibet (2026 rules; 2027 terms confirmed later). Every pilgrim needs a passport valid for 6+ months — an Election/Voter ID is not accepted for Tibet. Overland from Nepal, everyone travels on a Chinese Group Visa issued in Kathmandu, and any existing Chinese visa in the passport is cancelled. The Tibet Travel Permit can only be obtained by a registered agency; permits are included in our packages. Pilgrims over 70 are not permitted.
Current status: Kailash yatras are currently on hold after the August 2026 Rasuwa floods, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung road crossing is currently closed. We are building the 2027 priority list now — message us on WhatsApp to be added. 2027 dates and rates will be confirmed once the Tibet side confirms.
Quick facts — Kailash Yatra registration
| Fact | Value |
|---|---|
| Start registering | 6–8 weeks before departure (earlier for Saga Dawa, May–June) |
| Documents deadline | At least 30 days before entry into Tibet (2026 rules; 2027 terms confirmed later) |
| Passport | Valid 6+ months — Election/Voter ID not accepted |
| Visa | Chinese Group Visa issued in Kathmandu; existing Chinese visas cancelled |
| Tibet Travel Permit | Obtained only by a registered agency — included in our packages |
| Age | Pilgrims over 70 not permitted; minors checked case by case with us before booking |
| Medical | Fitness certificate from your doctor |
| Rates | 2027 rates on request |
Registering for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is simpler than most pilgrims think — but only if you start early. The single biggest mistake we see is people booking 2–3 weeks before departure, which is too late for the Tibet paperwork. Here is the step-by-step process.
The countdown checklist
| Time before departure | What you do |
|---|---|
| 8 weeks | Choose your package, confirm with a deposit, send passport scans + photos |
| 6 weeks | We prepare the Tibet permit and group visa paperwork |
| 5 weeks | You arrange travel insurance (covering up to 6,000 m + helicopter evacuation) |
| 4–5 weeks | Get medical clearance from your doctor; all documents with us at least 30 days before entry (2026 rules) |
| 2 weeks | Tibet permit and Chinese Group Visa processed |
| 1 week | Pack, settle the balance, fly to Kathmandu |
If you are planning to depart during Saga Dawa (May–June), start earlier — this is the busiest window of the season.
Documents you need
For Indian pilgrims
- Passport with at least 6 months' validity — an Election/Voter ID is not accepted for Tibet
- 4 recent passport-size photos (white background, taken within the last 3 months)
- Travel insurance policy with high-altitude cover up to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation
- Medical fitness certificate from your doctor
A passport is also what you need for flights to and from Kathmandu, so apply or renew early if yours is close to expiry.
For Nepali pilgrims and other passport holders
- Passport with 6+ months' validity from trip end date
- 2 photocopies of the passport bio page
- 4 passport-size photos
- Chinese Group Visa — issued in Kathmandu; we arrange it, you don't apply separately
- Travel insurance as above
Important: overland from Nepal, any existing Chinese visa in your passport is cancelled when the group visa is issued.
The permits explained
We handle all permits for you as a registered agency, and they are included in our packages. It still helps to know what they are:
- Tibet Travel Permit — required for any non-Chinese citizen entering Tibet. It can only be obtained by a registered agency; individuals cannot apply.
- Area permits for Mount Kailash — Kailash lies in a restricted border region (Ngari), so additional permits are processed for the group.
- Humla Restricted Area Permit — only for the Simikot trek route. Issued by Nepal's Department of Immigration.
Plus the Chinese Group Visa for crossing the Nepal–China border.
Medical clearance — what doctors look for
The Kailash parikrama crosses Dolma La Pass at 5,630 m. Your doctor will check:
- Resting blood pressure (must be controlled — under 140/90)
- Heart condition (no recent surgery, no severe arrhythmia)
- Lung capacity (no active asthma flare-up, no untreated COPD)
- Diabetes control (HbA1c under 7.5)
- Pregnancy (the yatra is not recommended during pregnancy)
Disclose any condition — Tibet has limited medical facilities, and hiding a problem can be fatal at 5,000 m. Plan for at least 2 nights above 2,800 m before going higher (2026 rules).
Age rule: pilgrims over 70 are not permitted (Chinese authority rule, all routes). Send us every pilgrim's date of birth before booking anything.
Booking deposit and final payment
- A deposit at the time of booking confirms your seat and starts the paperwork (2026 terms: 30%; 2027 terms confirmed later)
- The balance is settled before departure — payment options and dates are in your quote
A booking is not confirmed without the deposit, and permit paperwork does not start without your passport scan.
Common mistakes that delay or cancel yatras
- Booking too late. Documents must reach us at least 30 days before entry (2026 rules). We have had to turn away pilgrims who tried to book 2 weeks before Saga Dawa.
- Sending blurry passport scans. The authorities reject anything they cannot clearly read. Use a flatbed scanner, not a phone photo at an angle.
- Photos with the wrong background. Permit photos must have a plain white background. Light beige or grey gets rejected.
- Expired or damaged passport. If your passport expires within 6 months of trip end, renew first.
- Relying on a Voter ID. It is not accepted for Tibet — every pilgrim needs a passport.
- Skipping insurance. It is mandatory. Buy a policy that covers high-altitude trekking + helicopter evacuation, not a generic travel policy.
- Underdisclosing health. A heart condition disclosed early lets us route you on the Helicopter Yatra (fewer days at altitude). Discovered at altitude, it is an emergency.
