How to Register for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra 2026: Documents, Visa and Permits Step by Step
By The Kailash Holiday
Registering for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is simpler than most pilgrims think — but only if you start early. The single biggest mistake we see is people booking 3 weeks before departure, which is too late for the Tibet permits. Here's the complete step-by-step process for 2026 departures.
The 6-week countdown checklist
| Time before departure | What you do |
|---|---|
| 6 weeks | Choose your package, pay 30% deposit, send passport scans + photos |
| 5 weeks | We submit Tibet permit application to Chinese authorities |
| 4 weeks | You arrange travel insurance (covering up to 6,000 m) |
| 3 weeks | Get medical clearance from your doctor |
| 2 weeks | Tibet permits + Chinese Group Visa typically issued |
| 1 week | Pack, pay balance, fly to Kathmandu |
If you're planning to depart during Saga Dawa (full moon late May 2026), start 8 weeks early — permit slots fill up.
Documents you need
For Indian pilgrims
- Passport with at least 6 months' validity (preferred) OR valid Election ID card (Voter ID)
- PAN card copy (for Tibet entry registration)
- 4 recent passport-size photos (white background, taken within last 3 months)
- Travel insurance policy with high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation
The Indian Election ID is accepted at the Tibet border, but a passport is strongly recommended — it makes border crossings faster.
For Nepali pilgrims and other passport holders
- Passport with 6+ months' validity from trip end date
- 2 photocopies of passport bio page
- 4 passport-size photos
- Visa for China (Group) — we arrange this for you, you don't need to apply separately
- Travel insurance as above
The permits explained
You actually need 3-4 separate permits to do the Kailash yatra. We handle all of them for you, but it's good to know what they are:
Group Tibet Travel Permit — issued by Tibet Tourism Bureau. Required for any non-Chinese citizen entering Tibet. Takes 4-6 weeks to issue.
Alien Travel Permit (ATP) — required for Mt Kailash specifically (Tibet's "restricted areas"). Issued at Lhasa or Shigatse during the trip.
Military Permit — Mt Kailash falls in a sensitive border region near India. Required for all foreigners.
Humla Restricted Area Permit — only for the Simikot trek route. Issued by Nepal's Department of Immigration.
Plus the standard Chinese Group Visa for crossing the Sino-Nepal border.
Medical clearance — what doctors look for
The Kailash parikrama crosses Dolma La Pass at 5,640 m. Your doctor will check:
- Resting blood pressure (must be controlled — under 140/90)
- Heart condition (no recent surgery, no severe arrhythmia)
- Lung capacity (no active asthma flare-up, no untreated COPD)
- Diabetes control (HbA1c under 7.5)
- Pregnancy test (yatra not recommended during pregnancy)
Most healthy adults aged 18-75 pass without issues. Disclose any condition — Tibet has limited medical facilities, and dishonesty here can be fatal at 5,000 m.
We may ask elderly pilgrims (70+) for an additional fitness statement from their doctor before confirming.
Booking deposit and final payment
- 30% deposit at the time of booking — this confirms your seat and starts the permit process
- Balance due in cash on arrival in Kathmandu, or via bank transfer / eSewa / Khalti / international card 7 days before departure
A booking is not confirmed without the deposit. Permits won't be applied for without your passport scan and 30% advance.
Common mistakes that delay or cancel yatras
Booking too late. Tibet permits take 4-6 weeks. We've turned away pilgrims who tried to book 2 weeks before Saga Dawa.
Sending blurry passport scans. Chinese authorities reject anything they can't clearly read. Use a flatbed scanner, not a phone photo at an angle.
Photos with the wrong background. Tibet permit photos must have a plain white background. Light beige or grey gets rejected.
Expired or damaged passport. If your passport expires within 6 months of trip end, renew first.
Skipping insurance. This is mandatory for the yatra and impossible to fake. Buy a policy that covers high-altitude trekking + helicopter evacuation, not a generic travel policy.
Underdisclosing health. A heart condition disclosed early lets us route you on the Helicopter Yatra (lower altitude exposure). Discovered at altitude, it's an emergency.
When can you start the registration?
For 2026 departures, you can register from November 2025 onwards. Saga Dawa-window departures (May–June 2026) book out 3-4 months in advance.
