Day 2 is by far the most demanding — pilgrims climb from 4,900 m to 5,630 m at Dolma La Pass, then descend about 800 m to Zuthulphuk in a single day. Most groups start before sunrise (around 4 AM) to cross the pass in good weather.
How long does it actually take to walk?
Healthy, well-acclimatised pilgrims usually complete the parikrama in 3 days at a moderate pace (8–10 hours of walking on Day 2). Older pilgrims (remember: over 70 is not permitted), or those with altitude symptoms, sometimes extend to 4 days by splitting the route with an extra night.
Pony and porter support is available throughout the parikrama — rates on request. Ponies cover roughly two-thirds of the walking distance; the steepest sections near Dolma La usually have to be walked on foot.
Altitude and health check
Every pilgrim needs a medical fitness certificate from their doctor, and the itinerary includes at least 2 nights above 2,800 m before going higher (2026 rules; 2027 terms confirmed later). Our medical questionnaire is sent at booking. Pilgrims over 70 are not permitted on any route — this is a Chinese authority rule.
Comparison to other high-altitude pilgrimages
| Yatra | Max altitude | Distance | Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kailash Parikrama | 5,630 m | 52 km | 3 days |
| Amarnath Yatra (India) | 3,888 m | 36 km (Pahalgam route) | 5 days |
| Char Dham (India) | 3,580 m (Kedarnath) | varies by route | 10–12 days |
| Muktinath (Nepal) | 3,800 m | drive + 1 km walk | 1–2 days |
| Manimahesh (India) | 4,080 m | 13 km | 2–3 days |
The Kailash Parikrama is the highest-altitude Hindu pilgrimage circuit commonly undertaken by Indian and Nepali pilgrims, by a significant margin.
Tips that actually help on the parikrama
- Start Day 2 by 4 AM to cross Dolma La before the afternoon weather turns. Wind at the pass often picks up strongly from late morning.
- Oxygen is carried by the group — use it on Day 2 if your oxygen saturation drops sharply or you feel unwell.
- Dress in layers — temperatures can swing from -10 °C at dawn to +15 °C by midday.
- Hydrate well — 4–5 litres of water per day above 4,500 m.
- Ask your doctor about Diamox before the trip; if prescribed, it is usually started before reaching high altitude, not at the parikrama start.
- No alcohol or sleeping pills during the parikrama — both worsen altitude sickness.
