Most Kailash packing lists you'll find online are written by trekking influencers who treat the parikrama as if it were Everest Base Camp. It is not. Below is what actually fits in your duffle, what we provide, and what you can absolutely leave at home.
Clothing — the layered system
You're going to experience -5 °C nights at Diraphuk and Zuthulphuk, and 18 °C sunny afternoons in Taklakot, sometimes within the same 24 hours. Layering matters more than thickness.
Pack:
- 2× thermal base layers (top and bottom) — merino wool ideal, cheap polypropylene fine
- 1× mid-layer fleece or wool sweater
- 1× down or synthetic puffer jacket (rated to -10 °C)
- 1× waterproof shell (rain jacket) — light hailstorms are common in the afternoon
- 1× warm hat, balaclava or buff
- 2× pairs of light gloves + 1× pair of warm gloves
- 3× pairs of trekking socks (wool blend)
- 1× pair of broken-in trekking boots — do not bring brand-new boots
- 1× pair of comfortable shoes for hotel evenings
Skip: crampons, ice axes, snowshoes, mountaineering jackets. The parikrama trail is a path, not a climb.
Sleeping
We provide insulated sleeping bags rated to -10 °C at Diraphuk and Zuthulphuk. You do not need to bring your own. If you're a cold sleeper, add a silk liner — it adds 5 °C and weighs 200 g.
Toiletries and meds
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ (the sun at 5,000 m will burn you in 15 minutes)
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunglasses with side coverage (essential — snow blindness is real)
- Wet wipes (no shower options on the parikrama)
- Toilet paper and a small ziplock for used paper
- Personal medications for at least 5 extra days beyond your trip
- Diamox / Acetazolamide (your doctor decides; we carry emergency supplies)
- Painkillers, anti-diarrhoea, oral rehydration salts
- Chapstick. Pack two. You will lose one.
Documents
- Passport with 6-month validity (we hold these for permit application)
- 4× passport-size photos
- Indian pilgrims: PAN card, Election ID, address proof
- Travel insurance certificate (mandatory — must cover up to 6,000 m + heli evacuation)
- Yellow fever vaccination card if travelling from Africa or South America
- Backup printed copies of everything
Tech
- Phone + cable + plug (Nepal/India: Type C/D; bring an adapter)
- Power bank — 10,000 mAh minimum, 20,000 mAh ideal. There are no charging points on the parikrama.
- Camera (optional — phones are usually enough)
- Tibet has limited internet. Download offline maps, music, books before you fly.
What we provide (you don't need to bring)
- Sleeping bag
- Oxygen cylinders (one per group, plus personal pulse oximeter)
- Tents and dining tents during parikrama
- Walking poles (one pair available per pilgrim on request)
- All meals
- Pony / yak / porter for the parikrama (chargeable separately if you want one)
Final tip from our coordinator
The single most useful item nobody packs is a lightweight folding chair. The parikrama tea-houses don't have seating outside. Sitting on a stone for an hour while you wait out a hailstorm at 5,000 m is not the spiritual moment you want it to be. A 700 g folding stool fits in any duffle, weighs nothing on your back, and is loved by every group we've ever guided.

Frequently asked questions about Kailash Parikrama packing
What clothing do I need for the Kailash Parikrama 2026?
Layer-based system. Pack: 2 thermal base layers (merino wool ideal), 1 fleece or wool mid-layer, 1 down or synthetic puffer rated to -10 °C, 1 waterproof shell, 1 warm hat or balaclava, 2 pairs of light gloves plus 1 pair of warm gloves, 3 pairs of wool-blend trekking socks, and broken-in trekking boots. The parikrama experiences -5 °C nights at Diraphuk/Zuthulphuk and 18 °C sunny afternoons in Taklakot — layering matters more than thickness.
Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag for the Kailash Parikrama?
No. We provide insulated sleeping bags rated to -10 °C at Diraphuk and Zuthulphuk. If you sleep cold, a silk liner adds 5 °C of warmth and weighs only 200 g. Do not bring your own bulky sleeping bag — it eats into the strict 15 kg helicopter baggage limit.
What is the baggage limit for the Kailash helicopter route?
15 kg checked baggage and 5 kg cabin baggage on the helicopter portion (Simikot–Hilsa). The Tara Air / Buddha Air flights into Simikot also enforce this strictly. Pack light: duffel bag rather than hard suitcase, layers rather than bulky single items, and skip what we provide (sleeping bag, oxygen, walking poles).
What medications should I pack for the Kailash Yatra?
All personal medications for at least 5 extra days beyond your trip, Diamox/Acetazolamide (your doctor decides — we carry emergency supplies), painkillers, anti-diarrhoea tablets, oral rehydration salts, sunscreen SPF 50+ and lip balm with SPF. Disclose all medical conditions to your operator — Tibet has limited medical facilities and altitude amplifies most conditions.
Do I need crampons or special mountaineering gear?
No. The Kailash parikrama is a walking trail, not a climb — crampons, ice axes, snowshoes and technical mountaineering jackets are not needed. The Dolma La Pass (5,630 m) crossing can have snow patches in early May or late October but the path is well-trodden by yaks and pilgrims. Broken-in trekking boots with good grip are sufficient.
What sunscreen and sunglasses do I need at altitude?
Sunscreen SPF 50+ minimum — the sun at 5,000 m will burn exposed skin in 15 minutes. Lip balm with SPF (pack two, you will lose one). Sunglasses with side coverage are essential — snow blindness from UV reflection off the high-altitude landscape is a real risk. Glacier-grade sunglasses (Category 3 or 4) are ideal.
What does the operator provide that I don't need to pack?
We provide: -10 °C sleeping bag, oxygen cylinders (one per group plus personal pulse oximeter), tents and dining tents during the parikrama, one pair of walking poles per pilgrim on request, all meals (pure vegetarian on the Tibet side), and a down jacket on hire. Pony, yak or porter for the parikrama is available for ~USD $350 if you want one.
