Muktinath, at 3,800 m in Nepal's Mustang district, is one of the holiest sites for Hindus and Buddhists alike. Vaishnavites know it as one of the 108 Divya Desams. Buddhists call it Chumig Gyatsa — "hundred waters." Whatever your tradition, the experience of bathing under the 108 holy taps in freezing Himalayan water at sunrise is the kind of thing pilgrims remember for the rest of their lives.
This is the complete 2026 guide for first-time and returning Muktinath pilgrims.
What is Muktinath?
Muktinath sits in a sacred valley in lower Mustang, surrounded by some of the highest peaks in Nepal. The temple complex is unusual — both Hindu and Buddhist priests serve at the main shrine simultaneously, and the area is considered sacred to four religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Bon, and Jainism.
For Hindus:
- One of the 108 Divya Desams (holy abodes of Lord Vishnu)
- Site of Sri Mukti Narayan — the deity of liberation
- One of the eight Swayam Vyakta Kshetras (self-manifested Vishnu shrines)
- The Salagrama stones (sacred Vishnu fossils) come from the Kali Gandaki river below
For Buddhists:
- One of 24 Tantric places where Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) meditated
- Known as Chumig Gyatsa — "108 holy waters"
- Sacred to Vajrayana practitioners
The 108 holy taps ritual (Mukti Dhara)
Behind the main temple, water emerges from 108 brass taps shaped like cow heads, fed by a glacial spring. The ritual: walk under each tap in sequence, allowing the water to fall on your head.
What you should know:
- The water is freezing. It's straight from a glacier. Most pilgrims gasp involuntarily.
- Best time: early morning — the queue is shortest at 6:00-7:00 AM, the sun warms you afterward.
- Wear minimal clothing. A thin cotton dhoti for men, light cotton sari/salwar for women. You will get drenched.
- Bring a towel and a complete change of dry clothes for after.
- The 108 taps takes about 15-20 minutes to walk through if you don't pause.
- A 9-tap version exists (Naab Kund) for those who can't do all 108 due to health or cold.
Spiritual significance: Hindus believe all 108 taps together remove all karmic debts (108 being the sacred number). The water symbolises the unity of the five elements.
Mukti Kshetra and the eternal flame
Inside the main temple courtyard is Jwala Mai temple — a small Buddhist gompa containing an eternal flame fuelled by natural gas seeping from the ground. The flame burns continuously above a stream of water, with rocks and soil around — said to manifest all five elements (earth, water, fire, air, sky) in one place.
It's one of the few places in the world with this natural phenomenon. The current flame has reportedly burned without interruption for centuries.
Best time to visit Muktinath
| Month | Conditions | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| March - May | Spring; clear skies; warming days | ⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
| June - August | Summer; lower altitudes get rain; Mustang stays drier (rain shadow) | ⭐⭐ OK if flexible |
| September - November | Autumn; clearest skies of the year; mild temperatures | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best |
| December - February | Winter; snow blocks the road; only flight access | ⭐ Limited access |
Saga Dawa Düchen (the Buddhist full moon — late May 2026) is particularly auspicious for darshan if you're able to combine with Kailash Yatra before or after.
Janai Purnima (August full moon) is another auspicious window — sacred bathing day for Hindus.
How to reach Muktinath from Kathmandu
There are two practical ways. We offer both:
Option A: Flight via Pokhara–Jomsom (faster, $650, 7 days)
- Day 1-3: Kathmandu → Manakamana → Pokhara
- Day 4: 20-min scenic flight Pokhara → Jomsom (2,720 m), drive 30 min to Muktinath
- Day 5-6: Fly back, Pokhara sightseeing, drive to Kathmandu
- Day 7: Departure
This is the comfortable option. The Pokhara–Jomsom flight is one of the most scenic short flights in the world — Annapurna and Dhaulagiri rising on both sides.
Option B: Drive only (more affordable, $450, 8 days)
- Day 1-3: Kathmandu → Manakamana → Pokhara
- Day 4: Long drive Pokhara → Jomsom (7-8 hours along the Kali Gandaki gorge, past Tatopani hot springs)
- Day 5: Jomsom → Muktinath darshan, return
- Day 6-7: Drive back to Pokhara, then Kathmandu
- Day 8: Departure
The drive variant is for budget-conscious pilgrims who don't mind long road days. You see the whole valley — Tatopani's natural hot springs, Marpha's apple orchards, the dramatic Kali Gandaki gorge (the world's deepest at one point).
What to pack for Muktinath

- Light cotton clothes for the 108 taps ritual
- Towel + plastic bag for wet clothes after
- Comfortable walking shoes — there's a 30-minute walk from the parking area up to the temple
- Cash in Nepali rupees — there are limited ATMs in Mustang, no cards accepted
- Sunscreen and lip balm — UV is intense at altitude
- Personal medications including any altitude prep your doctor recommends
- Reusable water bottle — bottled water plastic is officially banned in Mustang
Local etiquette
- Remove shoes before entering the main temple (a wooden shoe rack is provided)
- No leather allowed inside the inner shrine (no leather belts, jackets, or shoes nearby)
- Walk clockwise around the temple (Hindu custom; Buddhists walk both directions but our local guide will direct)
- Photography is allowed in outer areas but not inside the inner sanctum
- Donations are voluntary; ₹50-500 to the temple priests is customary
- No washing or laundry in the holy water near the taps
Combining Muktinath with Kailash
Many pilgrims do both Muktinath and Kailash on the same Nepal trip — they're complementary sacred sites. If you have 18+ days, a typical combined route:
- Days 1-7: Muktinath via Pokhara
- Day 8: Rest in Kathmandu
- Days 9-19: Kailash Mansarovar Yatra (helicopter recommended)
