Badimalika Temple Yatra: Sacred Goddess of Far-Western Nepal at 4,200m (2026 Pilgrimage Guide)
By The Kailash Holiday
Badimalika is one of Nepal's most revered — and least visited — Hindu pilgrimage sites. The goddess Badimalika sits at 4,200 metres in the far-western Bajura district, accessible only by a moderately challenging trek across alpine meadows. The annual Janai Purnima festival in August draws tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Nepal and India, but outside this season the site sees just a trickle of devout pilgrims.
For those who make the journey, Badimalika offers something rare: a high-altitude goddess pilgrimage with near-total solitude outside festival season.
The story of Badimalika
According to Hindu legend, Badimalika is one of the Shakti Peeths — sacred sites where pieces of Sati's body fell after Lord Shiva's tandava dance of grief. Badimalika is said to be where Sati's left shoulder landed, making it especially powerful for pilgrims seeking the goddess's blessing for strength, courage, and overcoming obstacles.
The temple complex includes:
- The main Badimalika shrine (with the swayambhu — self-manifested — idol)
- A sacred pond believed to never freeze, even in winter
- A natural cave where sadhus meditate
- Panoramic views of the Saipal Himalayan range (7,000m+ peaks)
How to reach Badimalika
The Kailash Holiday offers a 6-day Badimalika Yatra at $349 — one of our most affordable high-altitude pilgrimages. Detailed package itinerary.

The trek: What to expect
The trek to Badimalika is moderately challenging:

- Maximum altitude: 4,200m at the temple
- Terrain: Gradual ascent through forest, then exposed alpine meadows
- Camp/tea-house facilities: Basic — tented camps mostly, with some local lodges
Fitness requirements:
- Capable of walking 5-6 hours at altitude

Pony rental available at the trail-head (~$30/day) for elders or those who need it.
Janai Purnima: The big festival
The full moon of Shravan (August) — Janai Purnima — is when Badimalika sees its largest crowds. Up to 30,000-50,000 pilgrims gather over a 3-day period for:
- Mass darshan and abhishek of the goddess
- Janai (sacred thread) changing ceremony for Brahmin men
- Raksha Bandhan observance
- Holy bath in the sacred pond
- All-night devotional singing (bhajan-kirtan)
Booking for Janai Purnima requires 60+ days advance booking due to limited accommodation and trek capacity. Festival pricing is +25-30% over regular dates.
Best time to go (non-festival)
Peak weather: April-May, September-October — clear skies, no monsoon, moderate temperatures.
Solitude season: November (after the festivals end). Cold but pristine. Most peaceful for pilgrims seeking quiet darshan.
Avoid: June-August (monsoon — except Janai Purnima which is during the rains; expect leeches and washouts on the trail), December-March (snow blocks the route entirely).
What to pack
