Damodar Kunda Pilgrimage Guide 2026: Helicopter, Trek Routes, Cost & Sacred Significance
By The Kailash Holiday
Damodar Kunda is one of the most spiritually powerful — and physically demanding — Hindu pilgrimages in Nepal. The sacred glacial lake sits at 4,890 metres in Upper Mustang's restricted area, accessible only by helicopter or a multi-day trek. For pilgrims who reach it, taking a holy dip in its waters is believed to grant moksha — liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
This 2026 guide covers everything: how to get there, what it costs, when to go, and what makes Damodar Kunda different from other Hindu yatras.
What is Damodar Kunda?
Damodar Kunda is a high-altitude lake formed by glacial melt, located in the rain-shadow region of Upper Mustang at 4,890 m (16,043 ft). The name comes from Damodar — one of Lord Vishnu's names — and kunda, meaning sacred pond. In the Skanda Purana and other Hindu texts, Damodar Kunda is described as the abode of Lord Vishnu in the Himalayas.
The site is sacred to both Hindus (as Vishnu's manifestation) and Buddhists (as a sacred lake associated with Padmasambhava's meditation). Pilgrims circumambulate the lake clockwise — a parikrama — and offer jal (water) from the lake to ancestors.
Two routes: Helicopter vs Drive + Trek
The Kailash Holiday offers both options:
| Route | Duration | Price (USD) | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helicopter Yatra | 7 days | $999 | Easy — minimal exertion |
| Drive + Trek | 8 days | $329 | Moderate — 4 days of trekking at altitude |
Helicopter Yatra ($999, 7 days)
Our 7-day Damodar Kunda Helicopter Yatra is the most popular choice for working professionals, elders, and pilgrims who can't manage multi-day high-altitude trekking. The helicopter departs from Pokhara, lands directly at Damodar Kunda for a 2-3 hour darshan, then returns the same day.
Day-by-day:
- Day 1-2: Arrival Kathmandu, drive to Pokhara
- Day 3: Pokhara → fly to Jomsom → Muktinath darshan
- Day 4: Pokhara → helicopter to Damodar Kunda → return Pokhara
- Day 5-6: Pokhara sightseeing, return Kathmandu
- Day 7: Departure
This route is the safest option for pilgrims aged 60+, those with mild heart conditions, or anyone who can't acclimatise gradually.
Drive + Trek ($329, 8 days)
The Drive + Trek option — at 1/3 the price — drives the Kali Gandaki gorge to Jomsom and then treks via Phuwa-Yara La pass (5,100 m) to reach Damodar Kunda. This is the traditional Hindu pilgrim's route, walked for centuries.
You'll need:
- Reasonable fitness (capable of 5-6 hours walking at altitude)
- Pre-departure altitude training (2-3 weeks of cardio)
- Medical clearance from your physician
The trek crosses one of the highest passes in Mustang, with views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and into the Tibet plateau.
When to go: Best months
Damodar Kunda is accessible mid-April through mid-October — outside of this window, snow blocks the trek route and helicopters cannot operate safely.
Peak pilgrim season:
- June (Jyaistha Purnima) — most auspicious full moon for the dip
- August (Janai Purnima) — high pilgrim crowds, festive atmosphere
- September-October — best weather, clearest skies for the helicopter
Avoid: Monsoon (mid-June to mid-September has unstable weather — helicopter flights can be cancelled for days).
What to pack
For the helicopter yatra:
- Warm jacket (down or fleece — temperatures can drop below 0°C at the lake)
- Hat, gloves, scarf
- Sunglasses (high-altitude sun)
- Sunscreen SPF 50+
- Personal medications
- A small bottle to carry holy water back
For the trek option, add:
- Trekking shoes (broken-in)
- Sleeping bag rated to -10°C
- Headlamp
- Diamox (consult your doctor)
- 2-3 days' worth of personal snacks
Sacred rituals at Damodar Kunda
Most pilgrims perform these rites at the lake:
- Snan (holy bath) — a brief dip in the icy waters. Most pilgrims do just a symbolic 3-splash abhishek with the lake water because of the cold.
- Tarpan — offering water to ancestors with mantras
- Parikrama — clockwise walk around the lake (takes ~30-45 minutes)
- Aarti at the small shrine on the lake's southern shore
- Take home jal — sealed bottle of lake water as prasad
