Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Cost: What Affects the Price
By The Kailash Holiday
The cost of a Kailash Mansarovar Yatra depends mainly on four things: the route you choose, how many days it takes, whether you travel in a group or privately, and when you go. From Kathmandu there are four main ways to reach Kailash — the 11-day helicopter route via Simikot–Hilsa, the 13-day group overland, the 15-day private overland and the 20-day Simikot trek. Each has a different cost structure. We quote rates on request, per pilgrim, for your exact group and dates; this guide explains what drives the price, what a package normally includes and which extra costs to ask about before you book.
Current status: Kailash yatras are currently on hold after the August 2026 Rasuwa floods, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung road crossing is currently closed. We are building the 2027 priority list now — message us on WhatsApp to be added. 2027 dates and rates will be confirmed once the Tibet side confirms.
Quick facts — what shapes your Kailash Yatra cost
| Factor | How it affects the price |
|---|---|
| Route | Helicopter and Simikot trek cost more than group overland (flights, charter, extra logistics) |
| Trip length | 11 to 20 days — every extra day adds hotels, meals, vehicle and guide time |
| Group vs private | Shared coach and fixed departures cost less per head than a private vehicle |
| Room sharing | Prices are usually per pilgrim on twin-share; single rooms cost extra |
| Season | Departures around Saga Dawa (May–June) are in highest demand |
| Group size | 5% off for 6+ pilgrims, 7% off for 10+ pilgrims |
| Rates | 2027 rates on request — WhatsApp us |
The four routes and why their costs differ
| Route | Duration | Main cost drivers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helicopter via Simikot–Hilsa | 11 days | Domestic flights + helicopter legs | Pilgrims in their 60s, short holidays |
| Group Overland (coach, via Kerung) | 13 days | Shared coach, larger group | Fit pilgrims watching the budget |
| Private Overland (via Kerung) | 15 days | Private vehicle, extra days | Comfort with full acclimatisation |
| Simikot Trek (fly + walk in) | 20 days | Camping crew, mules, Humla permit | Fit walkers |
The overland routes cross at Rasuwagadhi–Kerung, which is currently closed. Which routes run in 2027 depends on the border and on Tibet-side confirmations; we will tell everyone on the priority list as soon as we know.
The Helicopter Yatra — why it costs more
Our 11-day Helicopter Yatra is the usual choice for pilgrims in their 60s and anyone with limited leave. It costs more than overland because of the flying:
- Domestic flights each way (Kathmandu–Nepalgunj and Nepalgunj–Simikot)
- Helicopter legs between Simikot and Hilsa, the border point
- Small helicopters carry only about five passengers per flight, so each charter is shared between few people
In return you avoid four to five long road days and spend fewer days above 4,500 m. For a fuller breakdown see our helicopter yatra cost guide.
The Overland Yatras — group vs private
Both overland options follow the same road via the Kerung border, but with different service levels.
The 13-day Group Overland is our most affordable Kailash route. You travel by tourist coach with a larger group and stay in hotels in Kathmandu and guesthouses on the Tibet side. No frills, full experience.
The 15-day Overland Yatra uses a private vehicle, adds Bhaktapur sightseeing, an extra acclimatisation day at Kerung and a spare day at the end as a buffer. More comfortable, slower, more flexible.
The price difference between the two comes from:
- Private vs shared vehicle
- Two extra days of hotels, meals and guide time
- Hotel category in Kathmandu
- The spare buffer day
Simikot Trek — the most logistics-heavy route
Our 20-day Simikot Trek costs the most because it needs the most support:
- Mules and a camping crew through Humla
- About a week of camping with full equipment (tents, kitchen, dining)
- A special Humla restricted-area permit on top of the Tibet permits
- Food cooked on the trail
- Cargo flights for the trekking equipment
If you are fit, it is the slowest and most immersive route — but you pay for the extra logistics.
Season and Saga Dawa
Saga Dawa usually falls in May–June (the 4th Tibetan lunar month); 2027 dates will be published once confirmed. Demand peaks around it, so seats — especially helicopter seats — go first. September and early October usually have clearer skies and smaller crowds. For reference only, Saga Dawa 2026 ran from 17 May to 15 June 2026; see our Saga Dawa dates guide.
What a Kailash package normally includes
- Tibet Travel Permit and Chinese Group Visa paperwork — permits are included in our packages, and only a registered agency can obtain the Tibet Travel Permit
- Hotels in Kathmandu and guesthouses or hotels on the route
- Meals arranged; details in your quote
- Ground transport, plus the flights and helicopter legs on the helicopter route
- English/Hindi-speaking guide
- Oxygen support during the parikrama
- Duffel bag, sleeping bag and down jacket on loan for the trip; you can keep them for an extra charge — ask us
The hidden costs to ask about
Before comparing quotes, ask every operator which of these are included:
- China visa fee — inside the package or charged separately? Some passports pay more.
- Travel insurance covering high altitude (up to 6,000 m) and helicopter evacuation. Mandatory.
- International flights to Kathmandu from your city.
- Pony or porter on the parikrama for the steep sections around Dolma La — hired locally and usually paid separately.
- Single-room supplement if you are travelling alone.
- Tips for guides, drivers and the kora support crew.
- Personal costs — bottled water, laundry, phone, snacks.
A quote that looks low often leaves several of these out. Ask for the inclusions in writing.
Documents that affect your booking
Every pilgrim needs a passport valid for at least 6 months — an Election/Voter ID is not accepted for Tibet. Overland from Nepal, everyone travels on a Chinese Group Visa issued in Kathmandu, and any existing Chinese visa in the passport is cancelled. Documents must reach us at least 30 days before entry into Tibet (2026 rules; 2027 terms confirmed later). Pilgrims over 70 are not permitted on any route.
How to keep the cost down
- Choose the 13-day group overland if your fitness allows and the route is open
- Travel outside the Saga Dawa peak — September and early October are quieter
- Book as a group — 5% off for 6+ pilgrims, 7% off for 10+
- Share a room to avoid the single supplement
How to get a quote
Send us on WhatsApp: the number of pilgrims, their dates of birth, your preferred route and month, and your departure city. We reply with a written quote listing exactly what is included and what is not.
Frequently asked questions about Kailash Yatra cost
How much does the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra cost?
Rates are quoted on request, per pilgrim, because they depend on route, trip length, group size and season. Kailash yatras are currently on hold after the August 2026 Rasuwa floods; 2027 rates will be confirmed once the Tibet side confirms. WhatsApp us to join the 2027 priority list.
What is the most affordable Kailash route?
The 13-day group overland via the Kerung border is normally the most affordable, because coach, guide and vehicle costs are shared across a larger group. The Rasuwagadhi–Kerung crossing is currently closed.
Why is the helicopter yatra more expensive than overland?
Because of the domestic flights to Simikot and the helicopter legs between Simikot and Hilsa. Small helicopters carry about five passengers, so the charter cost is split between few pilgrims. In return the trip is shorter, with no long road days.
Are Tibet permits and the Chinese visa included?
Permits are included in our packages, and we handle the Chinese Group Visa paperwork. Ask whether the visa fee itself is inside your quote. The Tibet Travel Permit can only be obtained by a registered agency.
What hidden costs should I budget for?
Ask about the China visa fee, travel insurance with helicopter evacuation, international flights to Kathmandu, a pony or porter on the parikrama, the single supplement, tips and personal expenses.
Is there a group discount?
Yes — 5% for 6+ pilgrims and 7% for 10+ pilgrims.
