Kailash Helicopter Yatra for Seniors Aged 60–70
By The Kailash Holiday
Pilgrims over 70 are not permitted on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra — on the helicopter route or any other. This rule is set by the Chinese authorities who issue the Tibet permits, not by us. So this guide is for senior pilgrims aged 60–70, and for families planning the yatra for a parent in that age group. For them, the 11-day Helicopter Yatra is the route we recommend: it cuts out the long road days and keeps time above 4,500 m to about 5 days instead of 7 on overland. A medical certificate from your doctor is required for every pilgrim aged 60+.
Current status: Kailash yatras are currently on hold after the August 2026 Rasuwa floods, and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung road crossing is currently closed. We are building the 2027 priority list now — message us on WhatsApp to be added. 2027 dates and rates will be confirmed once the Tibet side confirms.

First: check the date of birth
Before anything else, check the pilgrim's age on the travel dates. If they will be over 70 when they enter Tibet, the permit will be refused — please do not book flights or hotels. Send us the exact date of birth and we will confirm eligibility before you pay anything. If they are in their 60s, read on.
Why the helicopter route suits pilgrims in their 60s
The parikrama around Mount Kailash is the same on every route: 3 days, about 52 km, crossing Dolma La at 5,630 m. What changes is everything before and after it. On the helicopter route you fly Kathmandu → Nepalgunj → Simikot, take a short helicopter flight to Hilsa on the Tibet border, and drive into Tibet. That replaces 4–5 long days in a vehicle with flights, and shortens the total time spent at high altitude.
| Factor | Helicopter Yatra (11 days) | Overland Yatra (13–15 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 11 days | 13–15 days |
| Days at 4,500+ m | About 5 | About 7 |
| Long road days | None | 4–5 days of long drives |
| Parikrama | Same 3-day, 52 km kora | Same |
| Suitable for pilgrims 60–70 | Recommended | Possible with caveats |
| Rates | On request | On request |
Medical clearance — what your doctor should check
Every pilgrim aged 60+ sends us a medical certificate from their doctor before we apply for the Tibet permit. We send a template with the booking. The doctor should look at:
- Heart — no recent heart attack, stent or uncontrolled hypertension
- Lungs — no recent major respiratory illness, asthma flare-up or pneumonia
- Diabetes — well-controlled diabetes is usually fine; uncontrolled is not
- Blood pressure — medicated and stable is usually fine; high and untreated is a red flag
- Mobility — able to walk 5–8 km on flat ground without stopping
- Orientation — able to manage independently day to day
The certificate should be dated within 3 months of departure.
Day-by-day altitude profile (helicopter route)
| Day | Plan | Sleep at |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Kathmandu, hotel transfer, briefing | 1,400 m |
| 2 | Pashupatinath darshan, fly to Nepalgunj | 150 m |
| 3 | Fly to Simikot, helicopter to Hilsa, drive to Purang (Taklakot) | 3,930 m |
| 4 | Acclimatisation rest day at Purang | 3,930 m |
| 5 | Drive to Lake Mansarovar, evening puja | 4,590 m |
| 6 | Holy bath, drive to Darchen | 4,675 m |
| 7 | Parikrama Day 1: Yamdwar → Diraphuk | 4,900 m |
| 8 | Parikrama Day 2: cross Dolma La (5,630 m), descend to Zuthulphuk | 4,790 m |
| 9 | Parikrama Day 3: walk out, drive back to Hilsa | 3,640 m |
| 10 | Helicopter to Simikot, fly to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu | 1,400 m |
| 11 | Departure | — |
The two nights at Purang (3,930 m) are the key acclimatisation step: the body goes from 1,400 m to nearly 4,000 m in a day, and needs that rest day before going higher. Day 8 is the hardest day of the whole yatra — many pilgrims in their 60s ride a pony for most of it.

Common questions from senior pilgrims
"I'm 68 and have controlled high blood pressure. Can I do the helicopter yatra?"
Usually yes, if you will still be under 70 on the travel dates and:
- You have been stable on your BP medication for 6+ months
- Your doctor or cardiologist signs the medical certificate
- You carry enough medication for the trip plus spare days
- You avoid alcohol completely during the yatra
"I had a cardiac stent placed some years ago. Is this safe for me?"
This needs an individual assessment by your cardiologist. As a general rule, a recent stent (within 12 months) or recent bypass surgery rules out the yatra. An older stent with no further cardiac events may be fine with clearance. Ask your cardiologist about a stress test 4–6 weeks before departure.
"My parent is 71. Can they come if they fly in?"
No. The over-70 rule applies to every route, including the helicopter yatra. Flying in does not change it.
"Can grandchildren come with us?"
Minors are checked case by case with us before booking. Tell us their ages early and we will tell you what is possible. Many families also plan Kathmandu or Pokhara time together before or after the yatra.
"What if I fall sick at Mansarovar (4,590 m)? Will I have to walk down?"
No. Every section outside the parikrama has road access, and we descend by vehicle, not on foot. Carry travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation up to 6,000 m altitude.
"Should I do a practice trek first?"
Not essential, but helpful. A short trek at moderate altitude in the year before — in Nepal or India — shows you how your body handles height. Regular brisk walking and stair-climbing in the 6 weeks before departure matters more.
What senior pilgrims should expect physically
Be realistic. Pilgrims in their early 60s usually find the parikrama hard but manageable. Pilgrims in their late 60s often say Dolma La was the hardest thing they have done, and were glad of the pony. The spiritual reward is real — and so is the physical effort. Plan for it.
How to plan a senior-friendly Kailash Helicopter Yatra
- Send us the pilgrim's date of birth — we confirm the over-70 rule first
- Tell us about their health — blood pressure, diabetes, mobility, any past altitude experience
- We send a medical certificate template for their doctor to fill in
- We arrange senior-friendly details — pony, room, pace group
- Documents reach us at least 30 days before entry into Tibet (2026 rules; 2027 terms confirmed later)
- Yatra begins in Kathmandu with a full briefing
Saga Dawa usually falls in May–June (the 4th Tibetan lunar month) and is the busiest time; 2027 dates will be published once confirmed. Senior-friendly slots fill early, so join the 2027 priority list now.
